The Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) data tool is an online platform using data from four CAHPS surveys. CAHPS surveys assess patient experience with healthcare facilities, providers, health plans and related programs, and selection conditions. This data tool provides tables and graphs summarizing patient experience.

Health Plan Survey Database
Patient experience with health plans and related services for Medicaid, Medicare, and CHIP program enrollees.

Home & Community-Based Services Survey Database
Patient experience for adult Medicaid beneficiaries receiving long-term services through state programs.

Child Hospital Survey Database
Patient experience for inpatient pediatric care, as reported by parents or caregivers.

Adult and pediatric patient experience in primary care and specialty settings.

What is the CAHPS Health Plan Survey? The Health Plan Survey asks enrollees about their recent experiences with health plans and their services. This standardized survey was designed to support health plans and purchasers in improving quality, and consumers in assessing and comparing enrollees’ experiences across plans.
What is the CAHPS Health Plan Survey Database? AHRQ’s CAHPS Health Plan Survey Database provides access to aggregated survey results. Organizations submitting survey data to this database include State Medicaid agencies, State Children’s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP), individual health plans, and public employers. Data from the Medicare Survey is provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. This database has been operational since 1998.
What results are available? This tool displays aggregated survey results since 2019 in the form of top box results, percentiles, and bar charts. Learn how results are calculated in the 2023 Health Plan Survey Chartbook (Appendix G). Participants in the Database can compare this aggregated data with their individual feedback reports for quality improvement purposes.
Chartbooks are also available. Review Chartbooks dating back to 2013.

Top box scores represent the percentage of respondents reporting the most positive response (e.g., “Yes, definitely” or “Always” for a composite measure or individual item, “9” or “10” for a rating item).
To review the top box scores for composite measures, ratings, and individual items, select a year and survey type; then choose whether to display results for the overall database, geographical region, or by product type.

Percentiles provide information about the distribution of health plan scores. The percentile scores are based on top box scores calculated for each health plan and represent the percentage of plans that scored at or below a particular top box score for an item or composite measure.
For example, let’s say that at the 75th percentile, a composite measure’s top box score is 59%. If your health plan’s score for that composite measure is 60%, then your score falls above the 75th percentile. This means your plan scored higher than three quarters (75%) of the health plans in the database.
To review the percentiles for top box scores, select a year and survey type.

What is the CAHPS Home and Community-Based Services Survey? The Home and Community-Based Services Survey asks enrollees about their recent experiences with State Medicaid agencies or managed care plans and their services. This standardized survey was designed to support health plans and purchasers in improving quality, and consumers in assessing and comparing enrollees’ experiences across plans.
What is the CAHPS Home and Community-Based Services Database? AHRQ’s CAHPS Home and Community-Based Services Survey Database provides access to aggregated survey results. Organizations submitting survey data to this database include State Medicaid agencies and the managed care plans with which they contract. Its purpose is to help evaluate, compare, and improve the quality of services provided by both fee-for-service HCBS and managed long-term services and supports programs. This database became operational in early 2020 and is a joint project between the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
What results are available? This tool displays aggregated survey results from 2023 in the form of top box results and bar charts. Learn how results are calculated in the 2024 Home and Community-Based Services Survey Chartbook (Appendix C). Participants in the Database can compare this aggregated data with their individual feedback reports for quality improvement purposes.

What is the CAHPS Child Hospital Survey? The Child HCAHPS Survey assesses the inpatient care experiences of pediatric patients (17 and younger) and their parents or guardians, who serve as survey respondents. The survey focuses on aspects of pediatric inpatient care that are important to patients and their parents, and for which patients and their parents are generally the best source of information. Hospitals, insurers, and policy makers can use the survey results for quality improvement initiatives.
What is the CAHPS Child Hospital Survey Database? AHRQ’s CAHPS Child Hospital Survey Database provides access to aggregated survey results. Results are compiled from hospitals who administered the CAHPS Child Hospital Survey and submitted to the CAHPS Database.
What results are available? This tool displays aggregated survey results from 2024 and 2023 in the form of top box results and bar charts. Learn how results are calculated in the 2024 CAHPS Child Hospital Survey Chartbook. Participants in the Database can compare this aggregated data with their individual feedback reports for quality improvement purposes.

What is the CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey? The CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey (CG-CAHPS) asks patients about their experiences with providers and staff in primary care and specialty care settings.
What results are available? This tool displays aggregated survey results in the form of top box results, percentiles, and bar charts for survey years 2018 through 2019. Learn how results are calculated for the CG-CAHPS Survey Database. Users of the survey can compare their data to this aggregated data for quality improvement purposes. The database began operating in 2010. In 2021, AHRQ suspended new data submissions for the Clinician & Survey Database due to a decline in participation.
Chartbooks are also available. Review Chartbooks from 2012-2019.

Percentiles provide information about the distribution of scores for physician practices. The percentile scores are based on top box scores calculated for each practice site and represent the percentage of practice sites that scored at or below a particular top box score for an item or composite measure.
For example, let’s say that at the 75th percentile, a composite measure’s top box score is 89%. If your practice site’s score for that composite measure is 90%, then your score falls above the 75th percentile. This means your practice site scored higher than three quarters (75%) of the practice sites in the database.
To review the percentiles for top box scores, select a survey year.
